Skippered Yacht Charter Holidays
Not a sailor? No qualifications? Want a chauffeur and wish to be taken off the beaten track? Then this is the one for you! This is a brilliant way to learn the ropes without the responsibility. Our friendly skipper will encourage you to take an active part in your holiday or you can simply relax and be sailed around!
It's easier than you think...
Booking a skipper allows for non-sailors or sailors to charter a yacht and go off on their own and experience the same beautiful environment as other sailors, without formal sailing qualifications. Skippers are also able to advise you on ports to visit, where to eat and places to swim. Take your time meandering from port to port, stopping for a lazy lunch and swim in beautiful bays along the way, before making the most of the afternoon breeze and sailing to your evening destination.
How does skippered charter work?
Skippers allow for non-sailors or sailors without qualifications to charter a yacht and experience what we sailors have been going on about for years. Being invariably local, the skippers are also able to advise you on ports to visit, restaurants to eat and places to swim.
It's very easy... We charter a sailing yacht with a skipper who effectively 'drives' the boat for you wherever you'd like to sail! You, your friends and family can get involved as much or as little as you like - it is a great activity holiday for all the family. Conversely, if sipping a G&T while sunbathing is more your thing then you can leave it totally up to the skipper to do all the work. Simply sit back and enjoy...
Where can we sail?
Within the five countries, we have 14 different sailing areas, each with their own unique ability to create a memorable sailing holiday. Picture yourself sailing from harbour to harbour, bay to bay, island to island surrounded by beautiful blue skies and the warm Mediterranean sun. Have a look at our destinations and don't forget to get in touch if you have any questions at all. We are real people, who really do love sailing! We also know first hand which sailing areas will be best for you and your crew.
Each country offers a variety of different sailing grounds, suitable for all types of sailor. In order to help you choose the best sailing holiday destination for you, we have put together some of our favourite routes into rough guides on each area...
Who are the skippers?
In each location we have professional, experienced and qualified skippers to sail your yacht for you. From all the Skippers we know we are able to select the one best for you based on your individual requirements. All our skippers are either local to the area, or will have worked in the area before, enabling them to provide unrivalled knowledge and guidance. Many of our skippers, have previously skippered on our flotilla holidays, giving them a unique insight into the areas in which they sail.
Your Skippered Charter Itinerary
When you take a skippered charter it is entirely up to you where you go. The skipper's local knowledge will go a long way but he will also be guided by you, your interests and preferences of where you would like to spend your holiday. The map below shows a typical skippered charter fortnight sailing from Split in the Dalmatian Islands of Croatia. You will typically sail to a different village, harbour or island every day, stopping for a lazy lunch and swim in beautiful bays along the way. Unless of course there is somewhere you would like to stay for longer... it is entirely up to you!
To help you choose a sailing area right for you we have put togehter a number of Rough Sailing Guides. Simply choose the area that you think will best suit your crew or give us a call for some advice. Between the team we have sailed in all of the areas we cover and so can give you first hand advice on what the weather is like, the local culture and most importantly where you can find the best restaurants! You'll be within cork popping distance of Hvar before you can say 'anchors away'...
Our top tips are to ask your crew what they fancy. Easy island hopping? Head to the Ionian Islands of Greece. If you are a keener sailor but looking to introduce family and friends, the Saronic Islands of Greece or the Dalmatian Islands of Croatia offer great wind combined with short island hops. If your crew are all budding Ben Ainslies, the Cyclades Islands in Greece offer strong wind and long sailing days. It's not all about the sailing however. You may have a family penchant for pizza or an other half with a love of prosecco? In which case Italy would be the place to go...the Mediterranean really is your oyster! Still unsure? How much does a skippered charter cost?
Hiring a skipper is similar to hiring any piece of inventory (with all due respect to our skippers of course!) in that you order them as extra and we add the charge accordingly. You then simply pay your skipper on arrival at the base. One of our experienced skippers is just €1050 for the week.
When hiring a skipper you are responsible for their food. This doesn't mean they need to be wined and dined, just simply include them in your plans for breakfast, lunch and drinks on board. In the evening you can choose to invite them out with you or simply cover their meal if you prefer to dine alone - the choice is yours. Many people find that the skipper becomes one of the best aspects of their holiday, and so discussing the following days adventure over a beer or two, tends to be more enjoyable than arduous!
Bear in mind that the skipper also needs their own cabin, so please consider this when organising your yacht. Many of our yachts have designated skippers cabins with a seperate entrance - perfect for both your privacy and theirs! Simply ask us about the best yachts for skippered charter when you book.
The best yachts for skippered charter
Being a part of Sailing Holidays Ltd comes with great responsibility in assuring that the yachts and people we use are of extremely good quality. We travel numerous times a year to inspect the yachts and meet all the people involved. We always recommend you opt for the newest model of yacht available as this minimises any visible wear and tear. We do however still offer slightly older models, in order to cater for all groups and budgets, and ensure we keep sailing in the Mediterranean an affordable luxury. Sailing with us you have confidence of knowing, that the yacht and people are of the best standard around, and that you have us here in the UK whenever you need any assistance.
Simply Sail or Book a Flight Inclusive Package
With us you can either simply book the boat (and skipper of course). This is often the most popular option for skippered charter. Or let us do the leg work and book your flights and transfers. The choice is yours! We use a mixture of airlines, including low cost operators, enabling us to cater to all groups and budgets.
What are the next steps?
Basically it's like a villa holiday! You should have a look at the different destinations and choose one you like the sound of. Selecting a yacht is the same as selecting a villa (six people will need at least three bedrooms - called cabins on a yacht + one extra for the skipper = a four cabin yacht!) The easiest way may be to give us a call on 020 8438 1133 and we can advise on the size of boat that would suit you...
Book with 100% financial protection
With hundreds of glitzy websites, bustling for space on search result pages, it really is difficult to sort the trustworthy from the undependable. After all, it is easy to build a flashy website (or print a glossy brochure...) quite a lot tougher to deliver an amazing sailing holiday. To ensure you know we are as trustworthy as they come, all payments for holidays with us, are covered by our Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) ATOL Financial Protection and the ABTA - ABTOT scheme.
Real people who love sailing (and more importantly holidays...)
Sure the other stuff is important – great boats, in awesome locations, with great sailing – but we believe our superiority lies in our people. From the moment you speak to someone on the telephone or via email you are talking to someone who has worked and been on our sailing holidays. They know first-hand what the boats are like, which areas will suit you best and even what the weather might be like!
Sailing Holidays has been running holidays in the Greek Islands for over 40 years and the welcomes still haven’t waned...years on the Sailing Holidays team and fleet have grown a little. What is important to us is ensuring we still provide the same personal touch to everyone who comes sailing with us. Be that on an independent yacht charter, flotilla holiday or luxury skippered catamaran! If you are keen to read more, meet our team or see what our customers have to say...
