Sailing Holidays in the South Ionian Islands

We have been sailing in the south Ionian Islands for over 40 years and it remains one of our favourite destinations. With its light winds and crystal clear waters it is an ideal place to introduce family and friends to sailing. The south Ionian Islands offers the ultimate island hopping adventure with a fantastic choice of islands and bays to explore. From the buzzing ports of Fiskardo and Kioni to the tranquil islands of Kastus & Kalamos - we could go back every year (and often do!).

The south Ionian Islands are like a sailors playground. Flat calm mornings, combined with afternoon breezes mean that there is seldom a whole day of sailing on the cards, but this adds to the relaxing nature of a holiday here. Enjoy short 10-20 mile days meandering between the islands, stopping for lazy lunch and swim stops, in beautiful bays along the way. With 40 years experience of sailing here, our rough guides should give you a good idea of the best places to go, whether you are looking for a wonderful week or fantastic fortnights sailing.

Where can we sail from?

Our south Ionian Islands base is Lefkas Marina. This modern marina is purpose built complete with shore power, water, toilets, showers, a shop and cafe/bar/restaurant. What more could you need?

It is also within easy walking discuss of charming Lefkas Town, where you can wander through the backstreets until your hearts content! We highly recommend dinner at the Lighthouse Taverna, nestled in a picturesque courtyard, off the main street. This followed by coffee or cocktails in the town square will give you a real taste of the Greek lifestyle.

So, tell me what's the weather and wind like?

Average Temperature in Corfu in the summerThe Ionian Islands are known for their gorgeous summers and light winds. The prevailing wind during the peak summer is extremely calm mornings, building to a very manageable north west Force 3-4, by mid-afternoon.

At the beginning and end of the season (May & October), the weather can be slightly more changeable, meaning that good wind is more common.

You can expect temperatures of around 30°C during July/August with it dropping to around 23°C in May and October.

Are there any hidden surprises?

The beauty of sailing in Greece is that you will often find there are no mooring fees when staying on a town quay. If the local port authorities do come along, and ask you to pay, then you can expect no more than €10 for a 38ft yacht.

How can I get there?

All flights to Preveza (the nearest airport to Lefkas Marina) from the UK are on a Sunday. You can choose to fly from London Gatwick or Manchester throughout the season (from May through to October). Flights from London Heathrow and Birmingham are available in peak summer (from June through to September).

If you are travelling from outside of the UK, and cannot find flights to Preveza, internal flights within Greece are a great option. Domestic flights run regularly from both Athens and Corfu airports which offer more options.
