Sivota Mourtos

A small village nestled in between the surrounding islands with stunning sunsets to the west.

In ancient times the safest harbour in each local area was called Sivota and this is no exception. However, either because of the famous battle of Sivota which took place here in 680 BC or because of the later bloody Turkish occupation, this Sivota became known as Mourtos (place of the dead). The locals would obviously prefer you to call it Sivota!

Approaching from the north, the lighthouse on the west side fairly high up on Sivota island and a ruined monastery on the headland just to the left of the town are conspicuous.

There is a gorgeous anchorage right around the other side of the island south of the channel which has become known as Fourth Bay. It basically approaches the sand bar from the other side.

This is a fairly deep anchorage with a hard weedy bottom so it does not have ideal holding but it is quite sheltered. It is a pleasant 20 minute walk over the hill to Sivota Town from here but a very difficult 40 minute meander home (joking!).

Unfortunately this area is developing extremely fast, sometimes to the detriment of the sailing fraternity, but at the moment it remains a very pleasant little area.
